Google AI Mode ads: eligibility, costs, and reporting limits

Your existing Google Ads campaigns may already qualify to appear in AI Mode, Google’s conversational search experience. You do not need a separate campaign or budget just to participate. Before paying for help, ask a provider to check your campaign eligibility, explain the available controls, and show how they will judge the business results.

The biggest catch is measurement: current reporting combines this activity with other campaign results. A claim that an agency can guarantee AI Mode placements or show a separate AI Mode return on ad spend deserves a closer look. Here is what an owner can reasonably ask for.

What changed, and why it matters now

In its October 28, 2026 announcement, Google expanded AI Mode ads to ten additional countries and announced U.S. ads across follow-up questions. This extends the opportunity to reach someone as a conversation develops; it is not the first launch of AI Mode advertising in the United States.

As checked on November 2, Google’s help page lists English-language AI Mode ads in the United States, Australia, Canada, India, Kenya, Malaysia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines, and Singapore. Pakistan is listed for text ads only. The announcement describes Brazil, Mexico, and the United Kingdom as planned expansions in the fourth quarter, rather than confirmed live markets.

For a U.S. business, the practical next step is a campaign review. A furniture retailer, for example, might want to reach someone comparing dining tables as well as someone ready to buy one. Whether its ads actually appear still depends on relevance, eligibility, and the auction. An expansion announcement does not justify increasing spending on its own.

Which campaigns can appear in AI Mode?

Google’s current campaign guidance includes existing Search, Shopping, and Performance Max campaigns. They participate automatically when relevant. Text and Shopping ads can appear, but eligibility is an opportunity to enter the auction, not a reserved position.

Have your manager check the campaign type, target market, language, and applicable advertising policies before proposing changes. A cleaning company using Search ads and a retailer using Shopping ads have different starting points. The Local Services Ads product has its own rules; do not assume this guidance makes a pay-per-lead campaign eligible.

Do you have to switch to broad match?

No. Exact and phrase match keywords can qualify when a search clearly expresses buying intent. These keyword settings help determine which searches can trigger an ad. A query such as “commercial cleaning quote” illustrates the direct kind of intent Google describes; it does not guarantee an impression for any particular advertiser.

Broader contextual matching works differently: Google considers both the question and the AI response. AI Max with search term matching enabled, broad match on Search, Shopping, and Performance Max can qualify for that matching as well as direct searches. Exact and phrase match alone do not qualify for the contextual route.

For a question such as “how can we reduce office cleaning complaints?”, a relevant next step could emerge within the answer. Treat that as a hypothetical example of the matching approach, not a promise that a cleaning ad will appear. Ask what broader targeting would change for your business before authorizing it. Our AI Max audit guide covers the separate task of reviewing that feature’s search terms, ads, and landing pages.

What do Google AI Mode ads cost?

Google says there is no extra participation charge. The usual auction and billing rules apply, so access to this experience does not create a separate AI Mode entry fee. It also does not make the advertising free or establish a standard price per lead.

Consider a business already spending on Search campaigns. Becoming eligible does not, by itself, require a second advertising budget. If an agency recommends more spending, ask which campaign will receive it, what business goal the change serves, and when you will review the results. Separate the agency’s management fee from the money paid to Google.

There is no reliable AI Mode cost benchmark in the two Google sources reviewed for this guide. Use your own margins and qualified inquiries to decide what you can afford. PPC management should connect campaign spending to those economics before recommending a larger commitment.

What can your manager control and measure?

As of November 2, you cannot target ads exclusively to AI Mode or opt out of it separately from Search. Existing campaign controls still apply, including exclusions for unwanted searches and brands where supported. Ask your manager to explain the controls available in your actual campaign rather than promising a separate AI Mode on/off switch.

For example, a company that only serves commercial properties should review searches and exclusions for residential work. That is a useful management task even when the report cannot identify the AI Mode portion of the activity. Broader eligibility should come with a plan to catch irrelevant traffic.

Reporting shows campaign totals

Google includes AI Mode and AI Overview ad activity in standard campaign metrics and search terms reports in aggregate. Those totals combine the activity with other results; the documented reports do not provide an AI Mode-only performance breakdown. A manager can review campaign spending and inquiries without claiming those totals prove the return from this placement alone.

Suppose a campaign produces 20 inquiries and your team confirms that six fit your service. Those are useful numbers for a discussion about lead quality. They do not establish how many of the six came from AI Mode. Agree on reliable conversion tracking for leads so the campaign review reflects real opportunities.

Before you pay: what can a provider show you?
The decision Evidence to request
Are our campaigns eligible? A review of campaign type, market, language, and targeting.
Eligibility does not reserve a placement.
Should we change targeting or spending? A written reason for each change, the relevant controls, and a review plan.
No separate AI Mode entry budget is required.
Are the ads helping the business? Campaign costs, qualified inquiries or orders, and their business value.
Combined results do not isolate AI Mode performance.

A practical proposal checklist, based on Google’s rules reviewed November 2, 2026. Each change still needs a reason tied to your business.

What to ask before hiring AI search advertising help

A useful proposal should describe work you can inspect. Start with these questions:

  • Which existing campaigns qualify, and what account evidence supports that conclusion?
  • If you recommend broader targeting, what will change and how will you check for wasted spending?
  • How will we distinguish qualified inquiries from calls, form submissions, or sales that do not fit the business?
  • Which results can you measure directly, which are estimates, and when will we review the decision?

For example, an owner hiring a manager for a small service business could request a written eligibility review, a record of any targeting changes, and a scheduled discussion of inquiry quality. That is a concrete service to evaluate, even without a report that isolates AI Mode. Ask for the reasoning behind each change before agreeing to ongoing extra work.

Paid advertising also does not influence Google’s organic AI answers. If your goal is to have your business cited without paying for an ad, our guide to appearing in AI Overviews addresses that separate question. A paid placement is labeled Sponsored and should not be sold as an organic endorsement.

Start with the campaign you already have

If you are considering Google AI Mode ads, begin with one business decision: is your current advertising bringing in the right customers at an affordable cost? For a service company, that might mean booked consultations that match its work and service area. For a retailer, it might mean profitable orders rather than clicks alone.

Motivated Digital Marketing’s Google Ads management service is a relevant place to discuss campaign eligibility, spending controls, and measurement. If paid search is only one part of your plan, search engine marketing services can help frame that broader conversation. Contact MDM to discuss what your campaigns are doing today and which changes are worth considering next.
